Appropriate and responsible behavior with regard to the use of technology. The issue of use, abuse and misuse of technology.
The 9 Elements Of Digital Citizenship
.) Digital Access: Anyone that uses technology needs to understand, not everyone else has that privilege. It is our duty as digital citizens to help provide digital access to everyone. Many people do not have access to and that makes harder as a society to move forward. We need to work towards equal digital rights and make sure everyone has digital access.
.) Digital Commerce: Buying and selling products or services online has become apart of everyone's life. It's grown exponentially over time. More than 80% of the online population has used the internet to purchase something. As great as it is, they're many issues the buyer or seller needs to be aware of. There is many legitimate uses for digital commerce, but they is just as many illegal uses for it, such as: pornography, drug commerce and gambling. Users need to learn how to use this service effectively and correctly.
.) Digital Communication: Being able to communicate with your friend or college has become a lot easier than it used to be. People can communicate any time of the day at any place in the world. They can do this via: email, SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook, phone call and on many more platforms. Sadly many people do not make the right decisions when deciding which communication method is best.
.) Digital Literacy: Technology is making its way into the work place but many people are put at a disadvantage because they don't know how to use it. People need to be taught how to correctly use technology. This should be taught in all schools as technology is becoming apart of everyone's lives and effects weather they get a job or not.
.) Digital Etiquette: Many rules are put in place to stop inappropriate use of technology. People need to learn how to behave in a digital society. Many technologies are banned because of rules and regulations, but we should go further and teach people how to become responsible digital citizens.
.) Digital Law: Stealing and scamming online is a crime so is causing damage to someone else's technology. They are rules and regulations people need to understand when it comes to technology, laws we need to abide by and we need to have respect for other peoples privacy. Digital law describes the ethical and unethical uses for technology.
.) Digital Rights And Responsibilities: There is basic set of rights given to every digital citizen. These rights need to be discussed, understood and bought to everyone's attention. Responsibilities come with rights too, its your responsibility to tell your digital neighbor what is the correct use for technology and what is the most effective way to be a digital citizen.
.) Digital Health And Well-Being: Many of us don't think about it but being apart of the digital world can effect our physical health, like your eyes and your back, due to extensive use of technology. Not only this but it can mentally affect us as well. Think about how many times you check your phone a day, or how many times you browse the internet. This leads to an addiction and you can actually experience withdraw symptoms from it. To avoid it simply be aware of what your doing and try educate yourselves on a healthy use of technology.
.) Digital Security: Just as we put up fences and put locks on our doors to keep our possessions safe from crime, we need to apply to same action to our digital belongings. This can be as simple as installing an anti-virus software or using common logic when downloading unknown software, but our digital belongs can also be in danger from lightning strikes or heavy storms. We need to put things in place to stop this from causing damage, like surge protection or making regular data back-up's.
